Choosing Satellite TV Services
(NOTE: This is
another one of our ongoing articles. For the complete current list,
please see the satellite TV article directory
below.)
What should you look
for when choosing your satellite TV services? Well, that all depends
on what type of programming you are after. Are you the type of person
who only watches sports, only watches movies, or do you prefer a wide
variety of programming options?
Also, what kind of
a budget do you have in mind for your television services? In general,
it should be noted that most television services are priced competitively.
However, there are some slight differences that you might want to
take into account if you are trying to stay on a specific budget.
For pricing, the general
breakdown is this; Cable is usually the most expensive choice. This
is followed fairly close by Directv® and then Dish Network. So
if you simply want the lowest prices available, you will probably
end up going with Dish Network.
There is a fine line
between getting the best deals and getting the programming that you
actually want to watch. For instance, with Dish Network, you might
sign up for one of their low priced packages, only to find that the
particular package that you have chosen dose not include some of your
favorite channels. So then you bump up to the next price bracket so
that your favorite channels are included.
As time goes by, you
start to notice that some of the programming on the Dish guide looks
attractive but that you are not allowed to watch those particular
shows because you are not subscribed to that tier of programming.
Over time, this may wear you down and you may eventually give in and
subscribe to an even higher priced tier. It happens all the time.
Now that you have upgraded
to the higher tiers, are you really saving as much money with Dish
Network as you originally intended? Another pricing consideration
for satellite TV services is the equipment charges. HDTV, extra satellite
TV boxes and other pieces of equipment may be considered optional
and can incur extra costs.
Let's say that you
finally take the plunge and buy one of those fancy LCD big screen
TV's that offer high definition. It would be a waste to not subscribe
to the HD programming that is offered by the satellite TV services.
This costs extra money per month. Then you decide to get TV in your
bedroom and so you need another satellite TV box. This also costs
extra money per month. It all adds up!
You might start out
with a total bill of under $50 per month for your satellite TV services
but once you start adding on extra equipment and extra services, you
might find that your bill has soared to well over $100 per month.
Then you may find yourself asking how this could have happened. After
all, you made the switch to satellite TV services so that you could
save some money, right? Well, the good news is that you can rest assured
that you did make a good choice by choosing satellite TV services.
You just have to choose wisely.
Start out by making
a list of goals. Decide on a budget and then really try to stick to
it. Make an extensive list of the channels that you would like to
have included in your satellite TV services. Start by choosing the
programming that you most often watch. Then you can list some of the
other channels that you may only watch some of the time or some of
the channels that other family members tend to tune in to.
The next step would
be to actually visit the websites of the satellite TV providers. On
their websites, you will find lists of television programming for
each of the packages that they offer. Start going through them and
make notes about the pricing structures and which channels are included
at each price level.
Another thing that
you will want to pay close attention to is how much each of the satellite
TV services charge for extras such as additional boxes and premium
services like HDTV. Figure out how many rooms in your home that will
be included and whether or not you want high definition services in
one or all of the rooms. There are also extra charges for DVR's and
DVR services. Digital video services and associated equipment charges
can add up. When choosing your satellite TV services, it should be
noted that fees for services and optional equipment can vary widely.
Try to be reasonable
and realistic with your expectations. Many people just dive right
in to the cheapest and most basic services with the intention of saving
a few bucks but then get hammered in a few months once they realize
that they can get this or that for a few more dollars per month.
If you know going in
that you can't live without a DVR or that you do want to get as many
HD channels as possible, be realistic and include these services from
the start. If there are certain channels that you are used to watching,
don't assume that you will just be able to give them up cold turkey!
Sure, saving money is a good thing but in the end, choosing to skimp
on programming and services could end up costing you more over the
long haul. Just be realistic with yourself when you are choosing your
satellite TV services and do keep in mind that you will be getting
what you pay for. Satellite TV services in general still offer a better
overall deal than you could ever get from cable.
