Getting Hitched on
Satellite TV?
Amanda and Abraham Rhode will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary
in 2057. They’ll be able to tell their grandchildren that it was anything
but a typical wedding ceremony back in 2007. For one thing, the groom
wasn’t able to kiss the bride, because he was half-way around the
world in a war zone, while she was at a National Guard armory in the
Twin Cities. The Rhodes began their life together by being apart.

Portable Satellite
TV
Sat-Go is DirecTV's upcoming portable satellite tv viewing box. Stashed
in traveling position, the unit looks like a power drill, butane grill
or any other mid-priced novelty in a dull plastic case. Unfold the
Sat-Go into its tent-like operating formation, however, and you'll
find a 17-inch LCD screen, a satellite dish embedded into the lid,
a small remote control that stows away and three power options, including
a rechargeable battery that will give you about an hour of video delight.
Units are set to go on sale next month, price and subscription fees
TBA. The Sat-Go weighs in at a hefty 26 pounds, so you'll want to
sneak it into somebody elses pack during your next backpacking trip.

Satellite TV Piracy
Charges
Three former Robeson County deputies pleaded guilty in federal court
this morning to conspiracy to pirate satellite television. Their charges,
felonies, are some of the least serious crimes unearthed in the Robeson
County Sheriff’s Office as part of the federal and state investigation
known as “Operation Tarnished Badge.” So far, 14 deputies have been
indicted on charges that include theft, arson and kidnapping.

Satellite Television
in your Minivan
DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group on Thursday announced limited
satellite TV service for its 2008 Dodge and Chrysler minivans and
several other models, continuing its plan to turn the family cruiser
into a living room on wheels. The company, which invented the minivan,
is teaming with Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. to bring three channels
- Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network - to the next generation
of minivans, as well as the 2008 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge
Magnum, Jeep Commander and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Satellite Sports Bar?
Television screens at each seat with
live satellite broadcasts are a feature that has changed the in-flight
experience for sports fans and nonfans alike, virtually creating a
sports bar in the sky. Fans can follow the action, but they do not
always do it discreetly.
“I can always tell when something
exciting has happened, good or bad,” said Natalie Ordakowski, a flight
attendant for Frontier Airlines. “Everyone lets out a huge roar. They
throw their hands up in the air or tease one another. We definitely
sell a lot more liquor when games are on.”
Major sporting events like the
N.C.A.A. tournament or the World Cup stir fans’ passions, and some
of those fans find themselves on airplanes during their teams’ games.

John Kerry Doesn't like Satellite
TV Deal
Senator says proposal between MLB, DirecTV
could limit access.
Sixty million consumers would
lose access to baseball's television package of out-of-market games
if the sport is allowed to strike an exclusive deal with DirecTV,
according to Sen. John Kerry. A day ahead of a Senate Commerce, Science
and Transportation Committee hearing, the Massachusetts Democrat said
the deal probably was legal but might not be good for fans. "When
you've got 75 million people who currently have the option of doing
something and you reduce it to 15 million, you've got to ask are the
terms of this deal fair and does it work for the fan and for the sport
itself?" he said during a conference call Monday.
